Many roads lead to Fortress Hohensalzburg

Get to the fortress comfortably on foot or by bus

Salzburg Central Station is only a 20-minute walk from Salzburg's Old Town. You will find the city bus stops on the station forecourt. Trolleybus lines 1, 3, 5, 6 and 25 run directly from the main station to Salzburg city center. Get off at the Rathaus stop or the Ferdinand-Hanusch-Platz stop. From there you can walk through Getreidegasse, via Alter Markt, Residenzplatz, Domplatz and Kapitelplatz to Festungsgasse in about five minutes. From there, you can take the FestungsBahn or walk up to Fortress Hohensalzburg.

Use Park & Ride parking lots or parking garages

The entire old town of Salzburg is a pedestrian zone and not accessible to cars.

Our tip: Park your car in the convenient "Park & Ride" parking lots at the Messezentrum (A1 - Messezentrum freeway exit) or in Alpenstraße (A10 - Salzburg-Süd freeway exit) and then take public transport to Salzburg's old town quickly and without traffic jams. Of course you can also use the parking garages in Mönchsberg or Nonntal. You will find further parking spaces in the Mirabellgarage, at the Rotkreuz parking lot on the Salzach or at the end of Linzergasse. You can have your parking ticket for the Mönchsberg garage stamped at the ticket office to get a reduced parking rate.

Conquer the fortress from one of the two bus terminals

In the city of Salzburg, bus groups are well catered for. The North Bus Terminal is located in Paris-Lodron-Straße (near Mirabellplatz), the South Bus Terminal in Erzabt-Klotz-Straße (Nonntal). These stops are used for passengers to get on and off the bus and must be left immediately afterwards. Parking spaces for coaches are located at the Salzburg Nord freeway exit, at Hellbrunn and at the Alpenstraße/Salzburg Süd P+R parking lot. The walk from the Bus Terminal South to Fortress Hohensalzburg runs through Salzburg's old town via Kajetanerplatz, Kaigasse, Kapitelgasse and Kapitelplatz and takes around 15 minutes to the valley station of the FestungsBahn.

Land comfortably at Salzburg Airport to conquer the castle

Salzburg Airport is the closest airport to Fortress Hohensalzburg. It is the second largest airport in Austria and is located directly at the Salzburg-Munich-Vienna-Villach highway intersection. It has excellent scheduled connections to major European cities and perfect links to the hubs of Frankfurt, Vienna, London and Zurich. It takes around 20 minutes by cab or public trolleybus from Salzburg Airport to Salzburg's old town: Line 2 (Walserfeld-Airport-Bahnhof-Obergnigl) runs daily at short intervals from the airport to the main railway station (23 minutes). Line 10 (Walserfeld-City Center-Salzburg/Sam) runs daily from Salzburg Airport to the city center (15 minutes).
