Experience modern art exhibitions & meet the artists in person

The Hödlmoser Atelier, named after the Salzburg artist Sepp Hödlmoser, has been hosting modern art exhibitions in collaboration with the Salzburg Traklhaus since 2006. During the summer months, various artists show their exciting works in the rooms of the studio and are also on site to work. But also to introduce visitors to their art in person. Everything from colorful textile works, classic screen prints and delicate drawings to impressive wire sculptures and elegant ceramic art can be discovered here. The Salzburg Traklhaus has been supporting artists of all genres in its exhibition rooms since 1973.

Over the years, various artists have used premises in the Salzburg landmark both as a place to work and as an exhibition space. These included artists such as Alois Lindner, Sepp Hödlmoser and Arno Lehmann.

Discover Stefan Balkenhol's work of art on the way up to the fortress

You can't miss it on the way to the FestungsBahn or on the footpath to the fortress: the oversized golden sphere on Kapitelplatz with a man standing on it. This is the artwork "Sphaera" by the artist Stephan Balkenhol from 2007. The golden sphere is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic, the frame is made of wrought iron and the man on the sphere is made of bronze. Incidentally, the sphere is so large that it is also clearly visible from the fortress. What few people know is that the Sphaera also includes a second work of art: the woman in the rock. It is located in the rock near the Toscaninihof. The artwork is part of the donated artworks from the Salzburg Foundation.

A sculpture that can only be recognized from a bird's eye view

The fallen star is a work of art by the American artist Paul Wallach. The work was created as part of the Salzburg Foundation's Krauthügel projects and has been on this site since 2018. The sculpture is intended to represent a fallen star and invite people to linger. The fact that the sculpture represents a star can only be seen from a bird's eye view - for example from Fortress Hohensalzburg.

The "School of Seeing" as a guest at Fortress Hohensalzburg

The International Summer Academy at Fortress Hohensalzburg was founded in 1953 by Oskar Kokoschka as the "School of Seeing". As part of the academy, young talents from the art scene attend workshops lasting one to several weeks during the summer. The participants of the Summer Academy come from over 50 countries and enrich Fortress Hohensalzburg with their artistic flair and life.
